Former New Jersey U.S. Attorney Christopher Christie, a Republican candidate for governor, is under attack for contracts he awarded during his seven-year tenure as the state’s top federal prosecutor. Christie held a news conference last week to deny ethical violations.

Christie awarded a contract worth at least $52 million to former U.S. Attorney General J

ohn Ashcroft to monitor a medical device maker accused of offering kickbacks to doctors. He also gave a monitoring contract to David Kelley, a former U.S. Attorney in Manhattan, who had previously investigated Christie’s brother for stock fraud. Kelley had declined to bring an indictment.

Christie was appointed to the U.S. Attorney job by George W. Bush. He is also facing questions for a $3 million Medicare fraud monitoring contract he awarded to a campaign donor named Herbert Stern.
