Attorney General Eric Holder asked for the support of the American Jewish Committee at its annual gala tonight as the Justice Department works out the conundrum over the Guantanamo Bay detainees.
Holder praised the members of the Jewish advocacy group for their efforts in battling intolerance and discrimination while also discussing the struggle that lies ahead for the Justice Department as it tries to determine whether to prosecute or release the 241 detainees at the military facility.
“We are reviewing each case individually and carefully,” Holder said.
The attorney general said Guantanamo Bay “undermines our fight against terrorism” and makes the United States “less safe.”
“The detention facility has allowed our enemies to portray detainees — many of whom are perpetrators of heinous and unspeakable crimes — as victims, which they clearly are not,” Holder said.
