Former Va. U.S. Attorney Brownlee Loses Attorney General Bid
By Andrew Ramonas | June 1, 2009 12:17 pm

Former U.S. Attorney for the Western District of Virginia John Brownlee will not be on the Republican ticket for Virginia attorney general.

Brownlee — who resigned from his post last year to focus on running for attorney general — lost the nomination Saturday to State Sen. Ken Cuccinelli. The former U.S. Attorney was trying to replace Republican Attorney General Bob McDonnell, who is running for governor.

President Bush appointed Brownlee to the post in 2001, and he served until April 2008. Brownlee was on a list of U.S. Attorneys who were considered for firing during the U.S. Attorney purge of then-Attorney General Alberto Gonzales.
