Northern District of Alabama U.S. Attorney Alice Martin will step down from her post this Friday, The Birmingham News reported this afternoon.

Martin, a Bush holdover, has been the district’s U.S. Attorney since her Senate confirmation in 2001. During her tenure, she helped bring bribery and mail fraud charges against former Alabama Gov. Don Siegelman. Members of Congress and 44 former U.S. Attorneys have questioned the conviction, which many critics have claimed is the politically-motivated work of then-Bush aide Karl Rove among other Republican officials.

This announcement comes on the heels of the Senate Judiciary Committee’s decision to vote Thursday on Joyce Vance, Obama’s nominee to replace Martin.
