Civil Rights Nominee Slated for Senate Vote
By Mary Jacoby | October 5, 2009 9:40 pm

After a months-long delay, Civil Rights Division nominee Tom Perez is slated for a Senate vote Tuesday, an aide to Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) tells us. A cloture vote has been scheduled for 12:15 a.m., with a confirmation vote coming immediately afterwards, if Democrats succeed in cutting off debate.

The nomination of Perez, who is Maryland’s secretary of labor, has been pending before the Senate since June 4, when the Senate Judiciary Committee approved him. He was nominated March 31. Perez was delayed by questions from Republican senators about his record on immigration matters, and by controversy over the Obama Justice Department’s dismissal of a voter intimidation case against the militant New Black Panther Party.
