FBI Director Almost Takes The Bait

Robert Mueller (Mat Honan)
Good thing the FBI is working to expand its cyber-crime division. Even Bureau Director Robert Mueller almost fell for an internet banking scam, CNET.com [1] reported.
In a speech Wednesday at the Commonwealth Club in San Francisco, Mueller said he received an e-mail that looked “perfectly legitimate” from a source purporting to be his bank. He began following the instructions, and was just a click or two away from blowing it. But something didn’t feel right. So he stopped. Now his wife has now banned him from online banking. ”No more internet banking for you,” she said, according to the FBI director..
CNET posted video of Mueller’s speech to Youtube.
The FBI’s $38 million cyber-crime budget request for fiscal 2010 includes funding for 95 new agent positions, 61 support staff positions, and new resources. “The FBI must expand its investigatory capabilities in order to meet projected increases in cyber intrusions as technology becomes more sophisticated and the intrusions more frequent,” the budget request reads.
The FBI’s cyber crime division has four directives: stopping hackers — including those attempting to infiltrate sensitive government systems — finding and prosecuting online sexual predators, protecting the country’s intellectual property, and dismantling national and international crime rings engaged in internet fraud.
