DOJ Opens Probe of Goldman Sachs
By Leah Nylen | April 30, 2010 9:55 am

The Department of Justice has opened a criminal investigation into the investment firm Goldman Sachs.

The Wall Street Journal first reported the news Thursday.

Prosecutors in the Southern District of New York are looking into whether the investment firm — which already faces civil charges from the Securities and Exchange Commission — violated criminal securities fraud laws. According to the Journal, the SEC referred the case to the DOJ prosecutors, but it is unclear whether the deal at the center of the SEC’s civil case is the same ones the DOJ is investigating.

Goldman Sachs has denied the allegations.
