Local and state law enforcement agencies will accept unused, unwanted or expired prescription drugs later this month as part of a Drug Enforcement Administration initiative intended to fight pill theft and abuse, according to the DEA.
Prescription drugs can be dropped off at locations across the United States on Sept. 25 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. local time as part of the “Take-Back” initiative. Collection sites are listed here.
“This effort symbolizes DEA’s commitment to halting the disturbing rise in addiction caused by their misuse and abuse,” Michele Leonhart, acting DEA administrator, said in a statement. “Working together with our state and local partners, the medical community, anti-drug coalitions, and a concerned public, we will eliminate a major source of abused prescription drugs, and reduce the hazard they pose to our families and communities in a safe, legal, and environmentally sound way.”
