By Daniel Hoffman | October 18, 2010 11:09 am

In 2009, 48 law enforcement officers were killed in the line of duty, a slight increase over the previous year, according to an annual FBI report released Monday.

The report, which measures the number of federal, state, local and tribal law enforcement officers killed and assaulted in the line of duty, found that another 47 officers died in accidents while on duty.

More than 57,000 officers were assaulted while on duty, and about a quarter of them were injured. Of those, 1,807 were federal law enforcement officers.

According to the figures, the overall number of officers killed while on duty is on the decline, although more officers were killed last year than in 2008 when 41 died while on duty.

The survey lists all the fatalities by state. It also describes the circumstances of these incidents, the weapons used, and profiles the officers and suspects involved.
