Washington Mayor-elect Vincent Gray named former D.C. Attorney General Robert Spagnoletti a member of his transition team last Wednesday. He will co-chair in the committee of Legal Affairs and Public safety.
Spagnoletti served as the first attorney general for the District of Columbia during former D.C. mayor Anthony Williams’ second term, from 2003 to 2007.
Prior to being attorney general for the District, Spagnoletti served as D.C. Assistant U.S. Attorney for 13 years. He was chief of the Sex Offense and Domestic Violence Section, prosecuting criminal cases involving domestic violence and sexual abuse.
An openly gay politician, Spagnoletti launched various programs to protect lesbian, gay, bisexual and trans-gender victims and reduce hate crimes. He also is a member of Gaylaw, an independent bar association working to advance the interests of the LGBT community.
In 2008, Spagnoletti joined the law firm Schertler & Onorato LLP , where his practice focused on criminal, civil and administrative litigation.
He also served as the president of the District of Columbia Bar in 2008-9 and as a member of D.C. Federal Law Enforcement Nominations Commission.
Spagnoletti graduated from Lafayette College and Georgetown University Law Center.
