Rita Glavin, former acting Assistant Attorney General of the Department of Justice Criminal Division, has joined Seward & Kissel LLP, along with white-collar specialist Michael Considine, to co-head the firm’s new Government Enforcement and Internal Investigations practice.
Glavin was appointed by President Barack Obama in January 2009 to head the Criminal Division during the transition period of his administration. In that role, she supervised the Foreign Corrupt Practices Act unit as it secured a $579 million settlement with KBR-Halliburton and worked to develop the Financial Fraud Enforcement Task Force.
She also oversaw the investigation of billionaire Allen Stanford and coordinated investigations across the government. Previously, Glavin was named acting principal deputy assistant attorney general of the Criminal Division under President George W. Bush in 2008.
Glavin, who most recently chaired the white-collar and government investigations practice at Vinson & Elkins LLP, also focused on white-collar cases as a line prosecutor in the U.S. Attorney’s Office in the Southern District of New York.
Considine most recently chaired the White Collar Defense and Internal Investigations practice at Day Pitney LLP for four years. He was nominated by President Bush in 2008 to be U.S. Attorney for the State of Connecticut and served as a supervisory federal prosecutor in the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Eastern District of New York.
In 15 years of private practice, Considine was appointed by the Justice Department as part of the Enron probe to monitor a major international bank. He also helped monitor a large healthcare entity and worked on government probes into financial institutions.
“The talent and experience Rita and Mike bring is extraordinary, and it will be particularly beneficial to our clients throughout the financial services industry who face a rapidly changing enforcement environment,” said John Tavss, chairman of Seward & Kissel’s policy committee.
Glavin and Considine join the firm as partners in New York to launch the new practice group.
