Alex Tse is returning to the San Francisco U.S. Attorney’s office to serve as its Civil Division chief.

Tse comes from the city of San Francisco, where he was serving as deputy city attorney. He fills the void left by Joann Swanson, who recently retired after more than 30 years with the office, according to The Recorder.

Tse has served in the city attorney’s office since 2007 where he worked as the chief of neighborhood and resident safety. Before that, he spent 12 years with the U.S. Attorney’s office. He served as a deputy in the Civil Division from 2001 to 2006. He also previously worked as an associate at Thelen, Marrin, Johnson & Bridges and at Sheppard, Mullin, Richter & Hampton.

Tse is a graduate of the University of California Hastings College of Law.

U.S. Attorney for the Northern District of California Melinda Haag told the Recorder that the office is excited to have Tse return.

“If I had to lose my civil chief, who has done such a tremendous job, I feel fortunate that Alex was available to come back,” she said.
