James R. DeVita, a former federal prosecutor in the Southern District of New York, has joined Day Pitney LLP in New York, the firm announced.
As an assistant U.S. Attorney, DeVita was the lead prosecutor in the tax evasion trial of billionaire Leona Helmsley. He joins the firm from Schoeman Updike & Kaufman LLP. He also was previously a partner at Bryan Cave LLP.

James P. Myers has been selected as special agent in charge of the Intelligence Division and Field Intelligence Group for the FBI’s Los Angeles Field Office, the bureau said in a news release.
Myers joined the FBI in 1987 and has worked in the bureau’s offices in Norfolk, Va., and Los Angeles. He has overseen several investigations involving the Mexican Mafia (EME) prison gang and the Mara Salvatrucha (MS-13) gang.

Benjamin L. Hatch has been named deputy chief of the Criminal Division in the Norfolk branch of the Eastern District of Virginia U.S. Attorney’s office.
Hatch, who joined the office in 2007, has prosecuted several cases against members of the MS-13 gang and a case against Somalian pirates alleged to have attacked two Navy ships.
“Ben is a talented prosecutor who has earned the trust and respect of prosecutors throughout the District,” U.S. Attorney Neil MacBride said in a statement. “We have an ambitious strategy to combat violent crime in Tidewater, and Ben is more than capable of leading that effort.”
Before joining the U.S. Attorney’s office, Hatch worked for Hunton & Williams LLP in Richmond, Va.

Maria Douvas, a former federal prosecutor in the Southern District of New York, has joined Paul, Hastings, Janofsky & Walker LLP, the firm said in a release.
A six-year veteran of SDNY, Douvas prosecuted securities fraud cases and was a member of the Securities and Commodities Fraud Task Force. She will work in the firm’s Litigation Department.

Sean Cenawood, the former head of the Southern District of New York’s Civil Frauds unit, will become a partner at SNR Denton, the firm said in a release.
Cenawood, a 13-year veterans of the U.S. Attorney’s office, was named as head of the unit when it was created in March. He previously served as the office’s affirmative civil enforcement coordinator, health care fraud coordinator and Immigration Unit chief.

Mark I. Labaton, a former California federal prosecutor, has joined plaintiff’s litigation firm Motley Rice LLC and will head up the firm’s new West Coast office in Los Angeles.
Labaton served for seven years as an Assistant U.S. Attorney in the Central District of California, prosecuting white collar and health care fraud cases.

The former Deputy Director for Legal and Regulatory Policy in the Securities and Exchange Commission’s Division of Corporation Finance will serve as a corporate partner at Skadden, Arps, Slate, Meagher & Flom LLP, the law firm announced Monday.
Brian V. Breheny will handle matters concerning mergers, acquisitions, securities regulation, corporate finance and corporate governance at the law firm’s office in D.C. He served as a deputy director at the SEC from 2007 to 2010.

Arnold & Porter LLP has a new partner in its corporate and securities practice in D.C., the law firm announced Monday.
Andrew Varner will handle various matters concerning acquisitions, mergers, securities and corporate finance at the law firm. He was previously a partner at O’Melveny & Myers LLP, according to The Blog of Legal Times.

The First Assistant U.S. Attorney for the Northern District of California will join Sidley Austin LLP in San Francisco, the law firm announced Friday.
David L. Anderson, who handled criminal, civil and tax matters as a prosecutor, will be a partner in the firm’s white-collar practice. He will focus on securities litigation and trial work. -AR

T. Markus Funk, a former Assistant U.S. Attorney in Northern District of Illinois, starts his career in private practice this week at Perkins Coie in Denver, Law Week Colorado reported.
Funk served in the Public Corruption and Organized Crime Section of the Chicago-based office for 10 years. From 2004 to 2006, he also served as the Department of Justice Resident Legal Advisor for Kosovo. (Read more about him in this Chicago Sun-Times profile from July.)
Funk will work in the firm’s Investigations and White Collar Defense Practice.
