The new U.S. Attorney for the Eastern District of Tennessee told the Knoxville News Sentinel that he and his family have a history in Democratic politics. But he said there won’t be any “political considerations” during his tenure as the top federal prosecutor in Knoxville, the newspaper reported Sunday.
Bill Killian, who became U.S. Attorney last month, said he had an early interest in politics, having a father who served several terms as the clerk for Marion County, Tenn. He now has a brother serving as the mayor of South Pittsburg, Tenn., and a sister who is a Marion County commissioner.
“I can assure you, I am no political figurehead,” Killian told the newspaper. “I don’t think politics solely get you the job. It’s a very political process, but once you get confirmed by the Senate and sworn in, you check your politics at the door.
The U.S. Attorney said he plans to strengthen his office’s Civil Division and bolster efforts to combat financial fraud.
