FTC Approves Fertilizer Deal

Agrium Inc. received antitrust clearance from the Federal Trade Commission for a deal with Terra Industries Inc., according to an announcement from the agency released today.

The approval follows the conditional approval the Canadian fertilizer company received from the FTC yesterday for its hostile bid for another firm, CF Industries Holdings Inc., based in Illinois.

It is the latest development in a year-long dance between the three agricultural products companies. CF made an unsolicited bid for Terra, then Agrium announced its own bid for CF.

Agrium has tried to block CF’s purchase of Terra, which is headquartered in Sioux City, Iowa.
