Southern District of New York U.S. Attorney Preet Bharara tapped a former prosecutor as his civil division chief, the Manhattan-based U.S. Attorney’s office announced today.

Andrew Schilling (Friedman Kaplan Seiler & Adelman)

Andrew Schilling, who served in the Southern District from 1997 to 2007, succeeds James Cott, who stepped down to become a Southern District of New York magistrate judge. Schilling was previously a litigation partner at Friedman Kaplan Seiler & Adelman in New York.

“I am pleased to name Andrew Schilling the new Chief of the Civil Division of the United States Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of New York,” Bharara said in a statement. “Andrew is bright, innovative, and fair-minded and will make an exceptional Chief of the Civil Division. It is my absolute pleasure to welcome Andrew back for a second tour of duty.”
