President Barack Obama singled out his Attorney General for a bit of light ribbing during remarks at this year’s White House Correspondent’s Dinner.
Appearing before a crowd of nearly 3,000 top journalists and politicians, the president made light of his recent description of California Attorney General Kamala Harris as “by far the best-looking attorney general in the country.”
“Even after all this time, I still make rookie mistakes. Like, I’m out in California, we’re at a fundraiser, we’re having a nice time,” Obama said. “I happen to mention that Kamala Harris is the best-looking attorney general in the country. As you might imagine, I got in trouble when I got back home. Who knew Eric Holder was so sensitive?”
The president initially backtracked from his comment about Harris, which he made during a fundraiser for the Democratic National Committee.
“She is brilliant and she is dedicated, and she is tough, and she is exactly what you’d want in anybody who is administering the law, and making sure that everybody is getting a fair shake,” Obama said at the time, adding: “She also happens to be by far the best-looking attorney general in the country. It’s true! C’mon.”
He later called Harris to apologize.
The president “did not want in any way to diminish the attorney general’s professional accomplishments and her capabilities,” White House spokesman Jay Carney told reporters. “He fully recognizes the challenges women continue to face in the workplace and that they should not be judged based on appearance.”
